Conservation is one of the three major interest groups in the
Garden Club of Honolulu, the others being flower arranging and horticulture. Conservation is of great importance to us in Hawaii, as
we are home to the largest concentrations of endangered species, both plant and
animal, in the world.
Clean water, clean air, preservation of native plants, and
responsible waste management are all areas of interest to our organization.
In 2007-2008 there was a monthly tip for Conservation to members in the Maile
Vine.
Jeff Mikulina, President of the Sierra Club of Honolulu spoke at our October meeting on
Global Warming. There was a display of biodegradable products plus centerpieces of Native
Plants.
Gail Suzuki, LEED Architect, was the speaker for the November meeting. For her topic: "Green
Designs for Buildings", she shared her materials incorporated in buildings including the John A.
Burns Medical Facility.
Members enjoyed guided tours of Coconut Island and Kawainue Marsh with weeding for "Partners for
Plants".
We have included our written position paper on the brown
tree snake in this website.
