Flower Arranging

For 30 years The Garden Club of Honolulu has offered classes entitled Stepping Stones to Good Gardening at Lyon Arboretum.  Classes were suspended in September 2004 and will not resume until permission has been granted by the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Stepping Stones is offered in a series of six classes in the spring and six in the fall and includes classes in flower arranging and horticulture.  Classes may be taken in a series or individually.  Lyon Arboretum also offers classes for adults in a wide variety of subjects.  For information on Lyon Arboretum, please visit their website, lyonarboretum.com.

We are proud our Major Flower Show, The Silk Road, held in April of 2006, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

There are many beautiful tropical flowers in Hawaii with which to work. Flower arrangers here are blessed also to have flowers from all over the world.

Here's a tip from the Garden Club of America Flower Show and Judging Guide:  "Qualities of color:  Surroundings.  Colors are affected by the color of their surroundings.  Colors appear most normal against a grey background.

Perspective can be built up by graduating and complementing the tints, tones and shades of each color.

Lighter, brighter colors are often used for highlights or local interest while darker colors give depth or can accentuate lighter colors (traditional design)."
